Fungus has been used in Chinese medicine for generations, yet coffee drinkers have only recently discovered its benefits. We already uncovered Kombucha, but making mushroom coffee is the new hot trend right now. What is mushroom coffee though, and how does it compare to the benefits of caffeine and other teas?

Mushroom coffee is basically regular black coffee mixed with powdered medicinal mushrooms. Even though it is made with fungus, it is muted and you can't taste it. The biggest difference between mushroom coffee and regular coffee is that it has about half the amount of caffeine. The caffeine content is similar to that of green tea, yet has better energy boosting properties with fewer side effects since it's all natural.

The most commonly used fungi are cordyceps, chaga, and lion’s mane, which are then mixed with instant coffee. It's that simple! Typically they're sold in single serving packets across the United States. Nonetheless, there are several brands experimenting with different flavors and mixing mushroom coffee with ingredients such as chicory, peppermint, and anise.
