Holidays are stressful, and sometimes there is no eliminating that. But there are plenty of things you can do lessen the stress. After all, the holidays are a time to be thankful for all that we have. Sometimes you need to sit back and reduce the stress. Continue reading to find out how to have a stress free holiday.
Perfection Is Not Reality
During the holidays, many of us strive for perfection. Perfect presents, perfect decorations, perfect house, and this is where the stress begins. We strive for everything to go smoothly. Sometimes things don't go as smoothly as we hoped, and that's okay. Months of preparing for a few days is crazy. Nobody will notice if a decoration is out of place or if your house is not as clean as you hoped. People come over for the company and excitement of the holidays - not to ridicule and inspect your home. If you keep in mind that perfection is not always obtainable, you will have much less stress in your life around the holidays. You should also try to do something for yourself everyday. In the midst of trying to be perfect, remember your own "you time". Whether it is some self-meditation or attending a workout class, remember that you come first and the holidays come after. You are no good if you are over-worked and over-stressed. If you are stress-free though, everything will fall into the correct place. Besides, no one loves a stressed out host!
Enlist Some Help
If you are supplying the house, other people can help supply food. It is hard to do everything by yourself, especially if you are juggling other things like work and children. When family or friends offer to help, graciously accept! They would not offer if they did not want to help you. Ask them to bring a dish or extra dessert, anything that will help your mind at ease. Ask your spouse to chip in more. You can't do it all, all the time. You can only do so much without becoming burnt out. You can also say to things. If you think you "need to do this or that," step and examine if you really must do it. Maybe it can wait for another day or until after the holidays. You can say no and put things off to a later date and just put a few tasks on the list for each day. If you don't get to them don't stress, just keep going and take frequent breaks for yourself. Tomorrow is another day. Better yet, give it to one of those people who offered to help you! There is no shame in needing a little help during the holidays.
Remember It's Supposed To Be Fun
That's right - the holidays are supposed to be fun. It's all about spending time with family, friends, and loved ones. It's about joy and fun. Remember to laugh a little. Sometimes when something is wrong or out of place, you can laugh it out and it will be okay. Superficial aspects like gifts and food are not the focus of the holiday. Company is the most important thing. Gifts do not have to set you back for multiple paychecks and food always be made. Take tasks that cause you the most stress and simply forget them. Odds are that they are not as important as you think. You can also approach it in a new way. Shopping for example instead of going alone with your little list, grab a friend and make a day out of it. Have fun and don't stress! The most important thing is that you create happy memories that you can cherish for many more years to come.
