We can all agree we had a long and cold winter, so it’s finally time for a little getaway. Even if New York is your home, there is a countless number of places waiting for you to visit for a few days. There’s no better way to kick off the summer than with a little vacay. Here are our best Memorial Day Weekend getaways!
Coney Island
There are many ways to celebrate Memorial Day in Brooklyn, with their own annual parade and festivities. If you’re looking for more fun and a thrill though, check out the most popular spot: Coney Island! The famous Boardwalk is full of delicious fair food, attractions, and rides. This is your chance to ride the Cyclone for the first time, or visit the summer BBQ event hosted by the NYC Hot Sauce Expo producers. You’ll surely be in for a treat here!
Montauk
We love western New York, but why not go all the way east to the tip of Long Island? Montauk may be “The End,” but your vacation will never end here. Home to beaches, hiking trails, biking, and seaside inns, you’ll be sure to be kept active over Memorial Day Weekend. The top landmark is definitely The Montauk Point Lighthouse, where you can climb all the way to the top of! Surrounded by the greatest restaurants, you’ll be in heaven and never want to leave.
New Paltz
New Paltz is a beautiful area on its own, but it’s especially great during Memorial Day weekend since that’s when they hold the Woodstock-New Paltz Art and Crafts Fair. Artists come in from all over the country to perform demonstrations and show off what they create in this fun place. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the finest craftspeople, listen to regional musicians, and taste some of the best food in the Hudson Valley. Furthermore, you can watch their annual Memorial Day parade and service at night.
Shelter Island
If you truly crave a peaceful Memorial Day Weekend getaway with a slower pace, then drive down to Shelter Island. You’ll be surrounded by serenity with the amount of creeks, marshes, inlets, and coves in place. With the water and coastline, you’re guaranteed to be relaxed. Visit the beaches, rent a bike, or hike in one of their preserves to really explore the island. You can also head over to Whale’s Island to be entertained with snacks, arcade games, and mini golf. Your vacation doesn’t get better than this!
Albany
It doesn’t get more American than to visit our state capital! Albany is the perfect road trip and fun place to visit for Memorial Day weekend. This city kicks off with a parade in the morning, right near the Capitol building. It is then followed by a ceremony at Academy Park, with tons of attractions to participate in. You can actually see a World War II ship if you’re into that, or take a relaxing boat cruise right on the Hudson River. Albany has something for everyone to enjoy their weekend.
