When trying to eat healthier, a common strategy is opting for more nutritious versions of foods you already eat. We replace whole-grain with white, fruits and veggies instead of chips, water instead of soda, but what about sugar? There's much debate around raw sugar versus refine sugar, so which is actually better for you?
Raw Sugar vs Refined Sugar
Overall sugar consumption plays a more important role in your health, but it's even more essential to know which one you are putting into your body. Raw sugar may seem like the healthier option, however in the end, both raw and refined sugar are sucrose. The main difference is truly the texture in the end. Raw sugar is less processed, has some impurities from the crystallization process, and hasn’t been bleached. Nonetheless, both contain the same micro-nutrients, number of calories, AND carbohydrates per teaspoon. How's that for a comparison?
Sugar & Your Body
Generally, it's better to stay away from any foods that are processed or contain a lot of sugar. Raw sugar is still processed the same way metabolically as refined sugar, so one doesn't digest better in your body. Switching from refined sugar to raw sugar won't help you eat less sugar. They taste the same to your body and are used in the same way, so consider eating less sugar overall as your goal.
So Which Sugar Is Better?
The answer is: Neither! Rather than focusing on which type of sugar you are spooning into your drinks or meals, consider how much you are adding. The recommended daily intake is about 50 grams of sugar, which equals about 10% of your daily calories. Cutting back on sugar altogether is your best bet, for you will see positive effects on your weight, blood-sugar levels, and overall health. Food logging is a great way to reduce your intake, starting with breakfast, and having a healthier year ahead!
